Congratulations!
Our department is full of wonderful and engaging faculty, staff, and trainees who are being recognized on campus, in our community, and at the national level for their outstanding work and character. Beginning with this issue, we will recognize awards and achievements of everyone in the department in every newsletter.
Congratulations to Drs. Renee Marchegiani and Annilin Severns for being elected chief residents for the 2021-2022 academic year. The chiefs will be responsible for the residents and fellows call schedules and act as a liason between the trainees and the departmental staff and attendings. They are instrumental in making our department function, and we are so proud of both of them!
Congratulations to Dr. Clayton Newell who was selected to attend the Academy for Emerging Leaders in Patient Safety: The Telluride Experience being held in Breckenridge, CO. Over the last sixteen years, The Academy for Emerging Leaders in Patient Safety (AELPS) has brought international leaders in patient safety, informatics, human factors, simulation and health science education together with patient advocates and resident physicians to address important patient safety issues.
Congratulations to Megan Bass, Alex Bradley, Lindsey Chenhall, Karli Dilback, Crissie Parker, and Joe Sudderth for being newly elected to the CRNA council. These members will be serving until 2023. And also congratulations to Mary Heard as new chair of the council.
Congratulations to Drs. Doug Bacon and Bryan Hierlmeier who were inducted into the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha, the first class of the chapter at UMMC. Election to Alpha Omega Alpha is an honor signifying a lasting commitment to professionalism, leadership, scholarship, research, and community service. A lifelong honor, membership in the society confers recognition for a physician's dedication to the profession and art of healing. We can think of no two better candidates for induction!

Congratulations to Drs. Anand Prem and Sara Robertson who were recipients of the Trailblazer Teaching Award. This award is presented by the UMMC School of Medicine Office of Medical Education and recognizes outstanding members of the medical faculty for demonstrating excellence in medical student education; for engaging, inspiring, and mentoring learners; for modeling educational leadership; and for serving as a catalyst for the enhancement of teaching and learning.
We are also very proud of Dr. Zurab Guruli, chief of anesthesiology at the VA, who has become a “hero back home” in his native country of Georgia in the fight against COVID-19. Watch the PBS video here for all the details.
